I am very proud to give a contribution towards the Meath Senior Ladies Gaelic Football team's appreciation night after the final.    The players on this team are among some of the sports people in this country, and should be regarded in the highest of esteem. They are great role models for girls and young women to continue in sport. #sport #meath

Irish Water & Milltown Road: New Main Road Works Update

Irish Water & Milltown Road: New Main Road Works Update   The new water main is progressing well, however we have another week of disruption ahead with works at the Hunter’s Lane junction scheduled to finished by Thursday 12th September.    The three-way traffic light system has been causing problems but I am appealing to people to please adhere to the traffic lights. New Footpath to link Baltrasna with 9 Mile Stone!

This has come to part 8 which means that it is going to the statutory planning process. This footpath is literally going to free the people who live in the area to be able to walk from their homes to the bus stop or into Ashbourne in complete safety. Your opinions are valuable and much discussions have gone on with residents. If there are any issues that you would like to highlight, get in touch.

Car Dumping in Gormanston

Every week, cars are dumped on Gormanston beach. Attempts are being made to not only crack down on this awful illegal dumping, but also to get them removed faster. New national waste bye-laws are being implemented which may help to reduce illegal dumping.

Wounded Police and Families Association

I had the pleasure of being able to meet with the Wounded Police and Families Assoc who recently stayed in the Pillo hotel, Ashbourne. Many of them told really amazing stories of bravery from men and women during the troubles, many of whom were only in their early twenties at the time and living with devastating wounds and disabilities from gunshots and car bombs. Their stories should be archived for future generations to learn about our terrible past. I also used the opportunity to give our...

Free Personal Alarm for the Elderly

Senior Alert Scheme The Senior Alert Scheme is a valuable initiative that helps to protect older and vulnerable people in the community by providing them with a personal alarm. It is worn either like a pendant around the neck or a watch around the wrist. When pressed, a wireless signal is emitted that alerts a 24 hour monitoring centre. It is designed to empower older people by making them feel confident and secure when going about their daily lives. I urge anyone who thinks they meet the cri...

Crime in Meath

"In light of an alarming increase in both burglary and theft in Meath compared to 2016, we call on this Council to write to the Minister for Justice asking to immediately increase Garda numbers and resources in all 3 divisions in the County (Ashbourne, Navan and Kells) and that if these resources are not forthcoming or available that the Defence Forces Army Rangers wing is brought in as an additional resource for night time patrol and check point duty." For those that do not know, a...

Gormanston Beach Concerns - Brendan Price

I take this opportunity to draw Council attention to deteriorating and neglected condition of Gormanstown beach and Meath coastline over recent years.  Lacking designation or special measures in area or development plan, it is all too easy think a beautiful natural resource will continue to mind itself in face of growing pressure and impacts and it is important to remind ourselves of obligations to the area under Wildlife Acts/EU Habitat; Water Framework: Marine Strategy Framework Direct...

European Union Survey: Brexit

This is a survey I sent out to all EU countries seeking their feeback about Brexit.    To whom it may concern, My name is Alan Tobin and I am a Councillor in the Ashbourne District of Meath, Ireland. I am writing to you because I am conducting a survey with the aim of compiling a collective European view of the implications of Britain leaving the European Union as perceived by all remaining EU countries. Ireland is at the western extreme of Europe and our nea...

Town Twinning!

Corcubion Introduction Town twinning is very common around the country and appears more popular in towns and villages in areas with particular tourist attraction. Ashbourne is the fastest growing town and district in Meath. It is the golden gate to the Boyne Valley and has huge potential in areas such as food, lodgings and local attractions including Tayto Park and the Hill of Tara. The idea of town twinning came from conversations with likeminded local people with a passion for their t...

Social Housing Opinion Piece

Social Housing Opinion Piece Submitted to Meath Chronicle   It's time to listen to what the people that live in our communities want! I would like to voice my opinion to what I believe may be the exact panic ridden knee jerk reaction to the housing crisis that we all feared would come to a head if proper forward-thinking planning for our counties future housing need did not happen. You see Ashbourne is about to have a new 100% social housing estate comprising of 67 houses, b...

Primatestown and Kilmoon Cross Update

Primatestown and Kilmoon Cross Update 5/12/16 In early November, a group of local Councillors met with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to discuss the N2 and find out what plans the TII had in relation to future progress when upgrading the road itself. Previously when the State was in a position to invest heavily in roads infrastructure, the N2 or M2 was to be upgraded to motorway standard. This link would have meant that Derry would be connected to Dublin with a dedicated motorwa...

Car Scam!

I am issuing this information to warn people who are considering purchasing a car from the internet, specifically Done Deal. I have recently been made aware of a scam that has been in effect for a number of months now at least, that involves a one or two people attempting to sell a car through this website. This scam seems to always involve the same people and the same car in every instance. They claim to be selling as residents living in Ashbourne’s surrounding areas but are in fact passi...

The Meath Joint Policing Committee (JPC) is a forum that links the community and voluntary groups with local area representatives and An Garda Síochána to develop greater consultation and cooperation on issues of policing and crime. They liaise at regular meetings to discuss main issues going on around the county and discuss strategies to help deal with problems. The organisation ultimately seeks to establish a relationship between the representatives, the community and the Garda&i...

Restricted Breed Controversy: My Side of the Story

A couple of weeks ago, a post I uploaded to Facebook sparked fierce controversy and was seen by millions of people around the world in a matter of days after going viral. The post, which included a picture of a restricted dog breed sign and a comment explaining how I did not view certain breeds as ideal family pets, resulted in much upset. I apologised for that statement on TV3’s Ireland AM, and I acknowledge the offence caused to families with the breeds of dog on this list. I could never...

Press Release: Buses

"Fine Gael Cllr. Alan Tobin amended his own motion that was subsequently passed at the Ashbourne Municipal District meeting on Monday 16th of May, which seeks to invite Michael Warnock of the NTA to attend the next Municipal District meeting in June. The motion originally called for Bus Éireann to revert back to the old 103, 105 and 189 services that had been adequately servicing Ashbourne for a number of years. However, following consultation with bus users in attendance at the last...

Local Property Tax: My Opinion

Submistted to Forum Newspaper I am submitting this opinion piece to balance the equation with regards to discussions about the Local Property Tax and the decision to keep it as it is. 18 out of 40 councillors voted to neither increase nor decrease the LPT this year and it is to be noted that over a quarter of Fianna Fáil Councillors were missing when this vote took place. It was requested by the Meath County Council’s finance department to retain the LPT figure because if it w...

Bye laws intoxicating Liqueur in a Public Place

On Monday 7th of September, a motion put forward by Fine Gael Councillor Alan Tobin, on the Prohibition of Consumption of Intoxicating Liquor on Roads and Public Places was unanimously passed at the monthly Council meeting in Navan. The introduction of this bye-law means that people who are found to be consuming alcohol on streets and open public areas can be hit with an on-the-spot fine of €75. Although some towns already have the bye law introduced, some smaller towns and villages do not ...

Eircode and Loc8 Code Report

Eircode and Loc8 Code Report Introduction What is Eircode? Eircode is a new post code system that is intended to be introduced this year under direction of Labour Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Alex White (formerly Pat Rabbitte when he held the position of Minister). A unique 7-digit alpha-numeric code will be applied to every postal address in Ireland under this system. The first part of the code is called a ‘routing key’, consists of three chara...

Canine Management and Control Report

Introduction This report highlights the recorded statistics under the Control of Dogs Act 1986 to 2010 with reference to County Meath from the year 2000-2013 inclusive. The purpose of this report is to examine Meath County Council’s handling of dog licences and its general law re-enforcement so that comparisons can be drawn between Meath’s results and those of its more successful counterparts (Cork county and Kerry). By analysing these statistics, it should become clear that ...

Scrap Eircode!

Councillor Alan Tobin today welcomed the passing of his motion calling for the proposed National Postcode, Eircode, to be scrapped and he thanked his fellow Meath County Councillors for their foresight and unanimous decisiveness in identifying that Eircode is far from being the best option as a postcode for a modern and growing Irish economy. Councillor Tobin expressed his concerns that the Department of Communications Energy & Natural Resources had shown little foresight in the selection of...

Illegal Dumping

There has been an astonishing increase in the amount of illegal dumping, not only within the Ashbourne District, but across the county of Meath as a whole. Over the last few weeks in particular I have seen televisions, microwaves, cabinets, domestic rubbish and furniture on roads and motorways, and in rivers and housing estates. Ditches and quiet rural roads appear to be very badly affected. On Gormanston beach, tyres and other garage waste are being consistently being dumped every couple of wee...

Signs for Kilbride NS

Kilbride National School is chaotic to say the least in terms of the traffic that surrounds it during school pick-up and drop-off times. At the moment, there are no adequate cycling or walking routes to give school children and their parents any incentive to travel in any way other than by car. This has caused concern in the local community because the school is located on a very dangerous bend on a small country road, the road safety signage is poor and there are currently no traffic calming me...

Motion for Pelican Crossings outside Schools

On the 19th of January 2015, I put forward a motion to the council regarding the provision of pedestrian ‘pelican-type’ crossings in areas around Ashbourne’s schools. These provisions are vital because they slow down speeding traffic on the road and prioritise pedestrians, but at present, there is a serious lack of road safety facilities in various important areas around the town. While the council have responded positively regarding the implementation of the pelican crossings,...

Ashbourne District Flooding Report

Thursday / Friday 13/14th Nov 2014 From Councillor Alan Tobin Introduction The following report is my personal account of what happened on Thursday 13th of November. The aim of this report is to highlight what exactly happened on the day, what factors contributed to the flooding, and what sort of response we as a council can put in place so this hopefully cannot happen again or that, in this time of climate change, if it does happen again or if it is worse, that we are adequately prepar...

Urgent Appeal for Road Safety Provision

Councillor Alan Tobin is putting forward an urgent appeal to the council regarding the provision of pedestrian crossings, pelican crossings, cycle routes and traffic wardens in the areas around Ashbourne’s schools. These provisions are vital because they slow down speeding traffic on the road and prioritise pedestrians, but at present, there is a serious lack of road safety facilities in various important areas around the town. Cllr. Tobin has highlighted pupils attending the primary Ga...

Revamp for Industrial Estate

Ashbourne Industrial Estate has remained vibrant over the last few years and is reasonably well looked after by the businesses in the industrial estate. The recent Business Enhancement Scheme encouraged business owners in the main town and industrial estate alike to make more of an effort with regards to the aesthetic maintenance and upkeep of the shop units, adding to the attractiveness of Ashbourne. However, in the last few months I have been contacted by several business and concerned cust...

Anti-Racism in Ashbourne

In recent years, Ashbourne has become a multicultural town; the home of many different people, cultures and nationalities. The integration of multinationals into the community is pivotal to sculpting Ashbourne into the ideal place to live in as it creates bonds and friendships between people of all ethnic backgrounds. In light of European Action Week against Racism that is celebrated annually on the 21st of March, the issue of racism in Ashbourne should be highlighted. Despite a perceived accept...

Native Trees to be Planted Locally

A competition ran by the Irish Independent last year to win thirty trees, courtesy of the Native Woodland Trust's  'Trees for Communities' scheme, has been won by local area representative Alan Tobin. The parcel received by Alan on the 11th of March consisted of ten Rowan, ten Hawthorn and ten Birch seedlings; all native species to Ireland. The Native Woodland Trust is Ireland's leading environmental organisation concerned primarily with woodland preservation; however, th...

Ashbourne has No Need for Speed

It has become apparent that there is an issue in Ashbourne with regards to speeding, particularly within housing estates, that need to be dealt with. Fine Gael local area representative Alan Tobin has acknowledged that there is a need for traffic calming measures to be put into place and has begun to work on getting rumble strips laid down in specific areas around the town that are considered to be especially dangerous including; Bachelors Walk, Johnswood, Millbourne, Westfield and Brindley Park...

Water, Water Everywhere... Ashbourne's Water Crisis

On Wednesday 12th of February at 8pm – despite the hazardous weather conditions – roughly 70 people attended a meeting in the Residents Hotel in Ashbourne, to discuss the current water quality crisis. At this meeting, representatives from Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, Sinn Féin, Labour and Independent gathered with concerned Ashbourne residents to address issues regarding the poor quality water supply that has been affecting many areas of the town. The general consensus was t...

Ashbourne to Santiago Cycling Trip

"On the morning of the 25th of May, I was up at 7:30 putting brand new panniers onto my racer bike and thinking about the three and a half weeks that lay ahead. My boyfriend Alan Tobin and I would be setting off in less than an hour for a cycle that would ultimately span over 2,000km from our houses in Ashbourne, Co. Meath, down the west coast of France and along the ‘French Way’ of the Camino de Santiago in Spain. Over the past few months we had both completed a few cycling ...
